Tough first season in Division 2 for the 1XI
Lismore had a tough first season in Munster All Rounder Cricket Division 2, finishing bottom of what was a tightly contested league. However they can consider themselves a bit unlucky as the season saw some strong performances and had 1 or 2 close matches swung the other way, they would have been close to the top of the table.
The opening weekend saw the 1st XI start with a 3 wicket victory over the eventual league contenders Harlequins at home. However this was followed by to losses at home to Kerry and Cork County. Overall, batting was the team’s weak point throughout the season, and it reached a low in Midleton, where in the drizzle and mist, Lismore could only post 56 all out in 23 overs, eventually losing by 9 wickets. This was followed by a 60 run loss in the return fixture at home. The season looked to get back on track with a 65 run victory against Kerry followed by a 6 wicket victory away to Cork County. However the team could not capitalise on the momentum, and lost their two remaining matches against Harlequins away and a 2 wicket loss that went down the the last over at Limerick.
It was a disappointing end to the season, particularly as the team left a few results behind them. However, we managed to be competitive in what was a closely fought division, and with not much between each of the teams, there were some highlights, including a memorable victory at the maradyke. Next year, we will look to strengthen our squad and include some of the players that performed in Division 3.
Highlights of the season include:
- Nathan Bryan, who played 4 matches and achieved a batting average of 63.67, including an 87 against Harlequins away. He also took 8 wickets at an average of 14.25.
- Steve Stone, who scored a 99*, against Cork County away and finsihed with an average of 54.50
- Mubbin, who played 6 matches and took 9 wickets with an average of 19.78
- Jim Bryan, who played 6 matches and took 8 wickets with an average of 6.38.
Well done to Charlie Bryan for captaining the team, and we look forward to next year.
